Independent Study by Two European Universities Ranks Thermoflow Software Programs No. 1 in Five of Six Categories
SUDBURY, MA (June 27, 2000) - Software programs from Thermoflow, Inc. captured the top rankings in five of six categories in an independent study conducted by two European universities to evaluate heat balance software tools available today for gas-fired combined-cycle plants and conventional steam power plants.
The study was commissioned by VGB (the German Association of Large Power Producers), and was performed over a two-year period by researchers at the University of Munich in Germany and the University of Graz in Austria. The report recently was published as VGB Research Project No. 177, “Comparison of Software for the Thermodynamic Process Calculation” by I. Giglmayr and M. Pogoreutz, March, 2000.
Thirteen software programs from industry vendors were evaluated for both combined-cycle and steam power plants in three categories representing the various phases of heat balance studies: preliminary planning, detailed planning, and simulation. In the gas turbine combined-cycle study, Thermoflow’s GT PRO/GT MASTER program was ranked first in all three categories.
In the findings for conventional steam power plants, Thermoflow’s STEAM PRO/STEAM MASTER software program was ranked first in the preliminary planning and detailed planning sections, and second in the simulation section.
Another Thermoflow program, THERMOFLEX, also received high marks in the VGB report, ranking higher in more categories than all non-Thermoflow programs in the study. “We are very gratified that our products scored so well in this independent study,” said Dr. Maher Elmasri, president of Thermoflow. “It is particularly interesting that THERMOFLEX, one of our newer programs, fared better than any competitors’ programs that are regarded by many in the industry as fully mature.”
GT PRO, Thermoflow’s first product, creates heat balance and equipment designs for given thermodynamic inputs. Optimized to help find the most suitable plant design for a specific application, GT PRO now has more than 1,200 users around the world. GT MASTER simulates performance of fixed plant equipment under various operating conditions. Both GT PRO and GT MASTER are application-specific products, while THERMOFLEX is a fully flexible design system.
